Why Good Posture Isn't About Sitting Up Straight All Day

When good posture comes to mind, most people think of sitting up straight, chin up, and their shoulders pulled back. While this holds some truth, posture is an integrated process.

What if sitting up perfectly straight was not in fact the goal??Sitting in the same straight spine, forced position for hours on end can leave your muscles feeling just as tired as slouching. There is not one generic ‘perfect posture” for all humans.

The most important part of posture you ask… this would be simply keeping your body moving.

Is There Such a Thing as Perfect Posture?

Our bodies are designed to move, not remain frozen in a single position for hours at a time. The posture that feels comfortable for one person may not feel comfortable for another. Do not hyperfixate on one variation of “perfect posture” that you have found online… rather familiarize yourself with a few varied, supportive positions throughout the day.

Why Staying in One Position Can Be a Problem

Whether you're sitting perfectly upright or slouching on the couch, staying in the same position for too long can lead to muscle fatigue.

Many individuals notice this as post the Covid-19 pandemic many people work remotely, slouched over their computers all day.

In our current day and age of technology galore… many people spend a lot more time inside as they have so many devices to keep them entertained. This is especially true for the younger generation, as their body is growing while they sit with their backs hunched for hours on end.

Movement Is Your Best Friend

One of the healthiest things you can do for your body is simply move more often.

Small movements throughout the day help every bodily function. Movement dosent have to mean a rigorous hour long workout every day, which may seem unreachable. Go for a walk, ride a bike, get up from your desk to stretch every half hour to hour…. Movement is not defined.

Variety Is Better Than Perfection

Think of posture like nutrition. Just as eating only one healthy food wouldn't provide everything your body needs, staying in only one "perfect" posture isn't ideal either.

Throughout the day, try to remember to:

  • Sit upright for a while

  • Lean back occasionally

  • Stand during phone calls

  • Walk around between tasks

  • Stretch your shoulders and neck

  • Change how you position yourself

What About Standing Desks?

Standing desks can be a useful option, but they're not a magic solution.

Standing in one place for hours can also lead to fatigue, especially in your legs, feet, and lower back.

If you use a standing desk, try alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day. The goal is always a variation of movement.
