Japan is home to some of the world's most famous ski resorts, attracting everyone from first time skiers to advanced enthusiasts. Whether you're planning a weekend in Hakuba, exploring the slopes of Niseko, or heading north to Hokkaido, preparing your body before ski season begins can help you get more out of your trip.

Although it's early August… It is never too early to begin to get into shape for this upcoming season. The earlier you start, the less stress your body will be under while you are on the slopes. Skiing is a mix of strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. All of those factors cannot be achieved overnight…

Why Preparation Matters

Many people only ski a few days each year. It's easy to forget how physically demanding it can be until you're halfway down your first run. As we inevitably age, our bodies are more prone to injury and stress being put upon all of our body parts.

Preparing ahead of time allows your body to gradually adapt instead of being surprised by several full days of skiing.

Build Strength Before You Go

Strong muscles help support your joints and improve stability on uneven terrain.

In the weeks leading up to your trip, focus on exercises that strengthen the lower body and core, such as:

  • Squats

  • Lunges

  • Step ups

  • Glute bridges

  • Planks

  • Side planks

You don't need an intense training program, even two or three strength sessions each week can help improve endurance and confidence on the slopes.

Don't Forget Your Balance

Skiing requires constant adjustments as your body responds to changing terrain and snow conditions.

Adding simple balance exercises to your routine can help improve coordination and body awareness.

Try:

  • Standing on one leg while brushing your teeth

  • Single leg reaches

  • Yoga poses that involve stability

These three exercises train the small stabilizing muscles that help keep you steady while skiing or snowboarding.

Recovery is Crucial

While incorporating exercise into the months leading up to your ski vacation, as well as stretching and balancing movements, please remember to not put a large amount of stress on your body. If you try to add too much to your plate too quickly, you could end up with an injury before you even get on the mountain. So don't pick up the heaviest weight first, or decide to try the most ambitious forms of exercise to prepare your body. This will result in injury to your body, mediation and slow progression is very important to remember. Also please don't fail to remember that progression is not always linear, you may need to take a break or slow down, spending on what your body is telling you.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Before ski season, some people choose to visit a chiropractor as part of their preparation for an active holiday.

A chiropractor can assess posture, joint mobility, movement patterns, and overall function to identify areas of restriction or imbalance.

If you have interest in seeing a Chiropractor as a part of your preparation for ski season, feel free to check out my website. Or you can head straight to my booking page.
