Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a type of healthcare that focuses on the connection between the body's structure (primarily the spine) and function. Chiropractic is a drug-free, surgery-free healthcare approach. Chiropractors adjust the spine as a natural, hands-on method to work.
The word “chiropractic” comes from the Greek “cheir” (hand) and “praxis” (action), meaning “done by hand”. Chiropractic is pronounced "kai·ruh·prak·tuhk" or カイロプラクティック.
How Does Chiropractic Work?
Chiropractic works because your body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism coordinated by your nervous system. Millions of instructions flow from your brain and spinal cord, via nerves, out to every organ and tissue in your body. Signals are sent back to the brain to communicate how your body is working.
Improper motion or position of the spinal bones are called subluxations, which can interfere with this vital communication. Irritated nerves may compromise the function of affected organs and tissues. Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments can help improve brain-body communications. Health often improves with better nervous system control of the body.
How Do I Get Spinal Subluxations (Misalignments)?
There are three basic causes of subluxations: physical, chemical, and emotional stress.
Physical stressors include:
slips and falls
car accidents
sports injuries
repetitive motions
improper form while lifting
Emotional stressors include:
grief from the death of a loved one
relationship stress
poor relationship with oneself
financial problems
lack of purpose
Chemical stressors include:
pharmaceuticals
recreational drugs
alcohol
processed sugar
zero-calorie sweeteners
allergens
pollution
How Do I Know If I Have A Subluxation?
In some cases, you may not be able to tell if you have a subluxation. Like the early stages of other conditions like tooth decay or heart disease, subluxations can be present before signs and symptoms become obvious. The results of an exam by your chiropractor can show the location and severity of subluxations you may have.
What Is Chiropractic Care?
The first visit at Electra Chiropractic can include a comprehensive health history, posture analysis, a range of motion exam, orthopedic testing, neurological testing, and a referral if additional imaging is indicated.
During the second visit, your chiropractor will share the findings of your initial exam and give you a recommendation for care. Chiropractic adjustments, lifestyle recommendations, and exercises may be included in this visit. If chiropractic is not the solution, or if co-management is recommended, a referral to the right healthcare provider will be given.
What Is An Adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments are quick thrusts that add motion to joints that aren’t moving correctly. Some chiropractors only use their hands, but others use instruments, a specific table, or the force of gravity. There are many chiropractic techniques, so not all chiropractors adjust exactly the same. Since there are over 7 billion unique people, not all patients are adjusted the same way.
How Will I Know If I Can Benefit From Chiropractic?
Your best bet is to speak to a chiropractor directly. I am an English-speaking chiropractor in Tokyo, registered and licensed in Japan, Hong Kong, and the USA.
I am happy to answer your questions before you decide if you want to do a full examination. If you are not located in Tokyo, I am happy to refer you to someone in your city. Please feel free to contact me here.
